Designer as Producer

typographical exploration, 2020

Re-designing of Ellen Lupton's article Designer as Producer using typography as the main way to convey the message. The articles' main point is for designers to have a closer relationship with the contents they're working with.

It's not just about designing something, it's about producing it from A to Z.

Original Article

Re- Design 1:

The first re-design of the article involved giving context to the reader of various of the subjects mentioned in the text. Sometimes, academic texts contain material on subjects that may seem obvious to the author- but not to the reader, that is who matters in the end.

By re-arranging the text in a timeline, I could visualize the text in a clearer way. Hence, the re-design was done through a timeline where on the left of it is Ellen Lupton's text and on the right is the context that I think the reader should have to fully grasp what is being said.

No change was applied to the actual text.

The second re-design of the article involves a crossword puzzle. In it, is the deconstruction of the article through the relevant terms found in it. The most prominent information is highlighted through the game, making it a more accessible academic article.

The only change made to the article itself is the crossing out of a phrase that says: "as an alternative to designer as author, I propose designer as producer. Since as the creator of meaning (as the designer) it felt like she was being apologetic about her statement.
